Exploring the Art and History of Hanfu in Malta

Following the launch of the Hanfu Costume Society at the China Cultural Centre in Malta, local Chinese culture enthusiasts now have an exciting new avenue to explore traditional Han Chinese clothing. Hanfu, with its history dating back over three millennia, was believed to have originated with the legendary Yellow Emperor. Distinguished by its flowing silhouettes, wide sleeves, and ornate detailing, Hanfu reflects variations in gender, social class, and dynastic era. Today, the resurgence of Hanfu in China—especially among younger generations—symbolizes a renewed cultural pride. Yu Cheng, who has lived in Malta for nearly five years, leads this initiative with passion. A dedicated Hanfu collector, she owns over 40 elegant pieces representing styles from the Western Han, Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties. Many are custom-made using traditional Chinese techniques like kesi silk tapestry and Suzhou embroidery—arts with over 2,500 years of heritage.
A Cultural Bridge Through Traditional Dress
Yu Cheng’s collaboration with the China Cultural Centre introduces more than education—it offers immersion. Through the Hanfu Costume Society, members of the public are invited not only to learn about these garments but also to experience them firsthand by trying them on. This hands-on approach helps deepen appreciation for the beauty, craftsmanship, and cultural meaning of Hanfu attire. Director Yuan Yuan of the China Cultural Centre in Malta emphasized that the initiative will strengthen cultural ties between China and Malta while promoting the richness of Chinese traditions. Yu Cheng views this as a chance to actively contribute to cultural exchange by sharing her passion with the local community. The Society’s first major event is scheduled for February 24 during the Lantern Festival, marking the close of Chinese New Year celebrations. Female volunteers are invited to wear Hanfu costumes in a public parade through Valletta. Further details can be found on the China Cultural Centre’s Facebook page.
