While it’s tempting to leave your furry companion at home while you hit the beach, dogs relish the opportunity to frolic in the waves as much as we do. Swimming not only offers them enjoyment but also serves as valuable exercise, bolstering their joints, lungs, and overall health. What better way to strengthen your bond than by sharing outdoor adventures?
Despite being surrounded by sea, dog-friendly beaches are regrettably scarce in our vicinity. However, we’ve curated a list of our top five favorites, prioritizing accessibility and safety for both you and your pet.
Dahlet ix-Xmajjar – Armier
If camping is your preferred pastime, Daħlet ix-Xmajjar, also referred to as Daħlet ix-Xmajjel, could become your go-to beach spot. Situated in close proximity to the primary campsites on the island, this secluded beach offers relatively straightforward access, whether by car or on foot. While the coastal approach to the bay is rocky, the terrain is predominantly flat, presenting an ideal environment for your furry companion to indulge in post-swim zoomies.
Rinella Bay – Kalkara
Even though the dog-friendly section of this beach is the smallest on the island, it boasts breathtaking views of Valletta and the Grand Harbour. Getting there is easy, whether by car or on foot, with handrails available for smooth access to and from the sea. Nearby parking adds to its convenience, making it a great choice for a quick dip with your furry friend.
This bay is mainly visited by locals, offering a serene environment for those seeking tranquility. If your dog is still getting used to the water, this sheltered bay is perfect for their aquatic adventures. Moreover, if you’re feeling hungry, there are a couple of restaurants nearby to satisfy your appetite.
Zonqor Point – Marsascala
Zonqor Point in Marsascala, located in the southern part of Malta, is another notable dog-friendly beach, possibly the largest among the islands. Access to this rocky shoreline is straightforward, as is access to the water. Ladders and handrails are provided to assist with entering and exiting the sea. The rocks in this area are mostly smooth, making them easily navigable for both you and your canine companion, regardless of their size. Additionally, the spaciousness and tranquility of the area make it perfect for families, both human and canine, to enjoy swimming together.
Tigne Point – Sliema
Easily reachable by both foot and car, with Tigne Point’s multi-level car park conveniently nearby, accessing this beach is a breeze. Situated in the heart of Sliema, you won’t need to venture far for food, drinks, or any other essentials, as everything is just a few meters away. Moreover, offering stunning views of Valletta’s majestic fortifications across the bay, this beach boasts a backdrop that few others in Malta can rival.
Accessing the sea is seamless for dogs of all sizes and humans alike. Additionally, the beach is shaded for the majority of the day, allowing you to enjoy a refreshing dip with your furry companion whenever you please.
Horizon Bay – Limits of Xwejni Bay, Gozo
Located beneath the Horizon Restaurant in Xwejni Bay, on the outskirts of Marsalforn, this rocky beach is one of only two dog-friendly beaches in Gozo. It’s the more accessible of the two and can be reached easily on foot, with a car park conveniently located just across the road.
While there are a handful of restaurants nearby, this beach is far removed from the busier center of Marsalforn, providing a more serene swimming experience for both you and your furry friend. Additionally, you might have the chance to catch a game of boċċi at the club just a few meters away.
Note
In the summer months, it’s common for dogs to be prohibited on Blue Flag beaches. However, they are typically allowed on rocky beaches throughout Malta and Gozo year-round, with the exception of Imgiebah Bay. Remember to clean up after your dogs and keep them leashed when they’re not in the water.
