New Road Junction Planned
For Paceville to Improve Access to St. Julian’s and Swieqi
Infrastructure Malta has unveiled plans to create a new road junction in Paceville, aimed at improving access to St. Julian’s and Swieqi. CEO Ivan Falzon announced that the agency will soon submit a planning application for the €40 to €50 million project, which is expected to be completed in two years.
The new junction will replace the current traffic light system, streamlining traffic flow and eliminating the existing tunnel connecting Swieqi to Paceville. Instead, a hairpin loop, slipways, and a roundabout will be implemented, ensuring smoother connectivity between the two areas.
The project’s goal is to improve traffic flow along Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli (the Regional Road), a key TEN-T route, and to introduce a grade-separated junction to enhance accessibility. Additionally, the road will be raised by 1.5 meters, allowing larger vehicles to use the underpass.
Robert Zerafa, an architect at Infrastructure Malta, explained that traffic lanes will also be reorganized to better accommodate vehicles entering and exiting Swieqi and St. Julian’s. Detailed plans have been developed with input from local councils, with ongoing discussions with other stakeholders as the planning process moves forward.
Infrastructure Malta is working to phase the project to minimize disruptions, ensuring that the busy road remains operational throughout the works.
In related news, the St Andrew’s road project has been completed and re-opened to traffic, while the final phase of work on a hairpin at the Pembroke entrance is expected to be finished by the end of February.
